Diana Sarmiento is the President of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at the Arizona State University (ASU) Chapter also known as SHPE de ASU. SHPE is the source for academic excellence and technical talent. This year her role is to collaborate with the executive board, to achieve SHPE’s goals of empowering the Hispanic Community in all aspects, by promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and  Math (STEM) fields, academic excellence, and promotional growth for all its members.

She served as Secretary to the executive board for SHPE de ASU last semester and has been a member since 2007. Being a first generation student coming from a big familia, she has demonstrated her passion for helping others by participating in the “Hermanas Disena Tu Futuro” conference since 2006. In the afternoons she tutors and mentors young high school students at Back to Life Inc.

In the past, some of her accomplishments have been obtaining an Associates of Science degree from Estrella Mountain Community College, interning twice for the Engineering and Architectural Services Department at the City of Phoenix and in Las Vegas at Southland Industries a design build mechanical engineering firm. This past year, she was employed as a student research assistant for the School of Materials at ASU at the Flexible Display Center for Dr. Ghassan Jabbour. There she assisted graduate and PhD students by programming a scriber machine to cut glass substrates.  She also, expanded her knowledge about Color Filters and Ink Jet Printing.

She is working at Minority Engineering Transfer Students Center where she assists Dr. Mary Anderson-Rowland with grading assignments and keeping track of financial records for the NACME, CIRC AND CIRC/METS academic scholarships. She is a senior pursing a degree in Mechanical Engineering. As a Latina, she is eager and extremely excited in motivating students, establishing new chapters, expanding and uniting the SHPE de ASU Familia, helping to create an environment for students to network with today’s leading professionals and making a sustainable impact in our community.

Callie Rubin, Vice-President Internal

Callie Marie Rubin is the Internal Vice President for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at Arizona State University (ASU).  In the past she has held the positions of Historian in 2004-2006 and as Academic Committee Director in 2006-2008.  Her role in SHPE this year is to be second in command to the President, ensuring that all delegated task are on schedule for completion on time, maintain contacts with other Hispanic and engineering organizations at ASU and in the community, and assist the Treasurer with the grant and proposal process.

She is a senior seeking a Bachelors of Science and Engineering in Aerospace Engineering from the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering.  During her school career, she has been a member of other organizations including Society of Women Engineers, Women in Applied Science and Engineering, and Boeing Activities and Meetings for Summer.  She aspires to further her education by seeking a Masters Degree in the field of Aerospace Engineering with an emphasis in Structural Analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics as well as taking flight lessons for a Pilot’s License.  Her ultimate career goal for the future is to add a Masters in Business to her educational background and start her own private air commuter business.

She is currently employed with The Boeing Company in Mesa, AZ as an Inventory Modeling Specialist for the Apache Lifecycle Support Program.  In the past, she worked as a Research Intern for the City of Tempe in Tempe, AZ for eighteen months.  In this position she revised the Solid Waste laws for the Public Works department and worked closely with the City Attorney to ensure there successful approval by City Council. She also worked as an Engineering Intern for The Boeing Company in Houston, TX  for seven months with the Aeroheating, Venting, Aerodynamics, and Computational Fluid Dynamics group in the Shuttle Program. In this position she learned the functionality of all four subgroups completing projects that aided in mission support for a shuttle mission to the International Space Station during her time, and the results of these projects will be utilized on other missions to come.

Aura Robledo, Secretary

Aura Robledo is starting her third year at Arizona State. She is a conservation biology major with a minor in spanish. On campus Aura is involved with volunteer opportunities with different organizations such as Theta Nu Xi Multi-Cultural Sorority, Hispanic Mother Daughter Program and Las Hermanas. She also works for Adelante Educational Services, a California based tutoring company that targets tutoring for schools that are under performing. Aura finds Aura is also an active animal volunteer off campus at the Arizona Humane Society and the Phoenix Zoo. She is looking forward to adding to this year’s Executive Board of SHPE de ASU as the secretary.

Daniela Flores, Treasurer

Daniela Flores is a senior pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Industrial, Systems and Operations Engineering from a program ranked 16th nationally, at Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering. She is the Treasurer for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at Arizona State University. Daniela moved to Arizona from Sonora, Mexico when she was 15 years old to pursue a better education. She graduated Salutatorian from high school, and she received the Principal’s Award and Academic Letter for being Student of the Year in science, math and English. Following high school, she attended Glendale Community College with a Presidential Scholarship and was on the Honors List for several semesters. During her time at college, she worked for Frontera Communications, INC. as a Marketing and Product Manager, later moving to Finance Manager Assistant at the same company. Currently, her sole focus is on school work at Arizona State University, where she is starting a Masters in Industrial Engineering through a Bachelors-Masters integrated program.

Corina Prieto, Public Affairs

Corina Prieto is a senior enrolled in the Bioengineering Program at Arizona State University where she is pursuing her Bachelor’s of Science Degree.  Upon completion of this program she plans to pursue an M.D./Ph.D.  Corina enjoys getting involved and giving back to her community and is currently the Public Affairs Officer for SHPE de ASU and Awareness Chair for Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority, Inc.  She was born in Jerez Zacatecas Mexico, is the youngest of nine and the first to graduate high school and attend college.  She understands and values the importance of pursuing a higher education. Through her academic endeavors she plans to motivate and encourage the younger generations in her family and community to take action and do the same.  Moreover, she is passionate about recruiting more women into math and science related fields, and enjoys reaching out to middle and high school girls with the goal of getting them excited and interested in science and engineering.

Noel Acosta, Webmaster

Noel Acosta will be going into his second year at Arizona State University studying Computer Information Systems. He is very passionate about taking advantage of information technology to improve the quality of life. So, it should be no surprise that he chose to take on the webmaster executive board position for SHPE de ASU. He is also the webmaster for ASU’s Engineers Without Borders student chapter and an active participant in ASU’s Women in Computer Science club. He spent this past summer interning with Cox Communications as a Project Engineering Coordinator and currently works for Wilson Electric serving as their Web Developer. This will be his second year with SHPE and he is greatly looking forward to it!
